When social media and news outlets seem to focus only on first world problems, its easy to think that our world is some candy land.Everyone s biggest worries are what there next car will be unfortunately, this is very far from the truth.Race and gender are still major problems in society, and not a lot is being done to discuss these problems.
When thinking about some these bigger problems, one that doesn t get much exposure, at least as much as it should is Race. In the reading The Money Junot Diaz, the author goes into some of his personal experiences while being a different race while in the workforce. It sounds like a really silly saying when talking about something as big as these problems, but it couldn t be anymore true. So many people are judged solely based on their appearance, and there s really nothing the individual can do about it. When going a job interview, the interviewer will take not as soon as someone walks in on what race and gender you are. The most preferable combination of these two factors most of the time are a white male, because they have always been looked at as the superior combination, even though they don t hold any advantage. When someone of maybe a middle eastern race walks in for the same job interview, automatically they are classified lower than the white male that came in before. This is because someone from the middle east doesn t fit the right appearance. The same will always go if a women went for the job interview, and if the women also falls under a different race, then it can make it even worse for them. It s hard to see that this is the reality of how people are hired, and this same system goes up to some of the most important jobs in this country. ![]() ![]() For many Americans, ideas of what constitutes Blackness are heavily influenced by media portrayals of African Americans; yet, these popular representations of Black Americans and their culture often highlight dated stereotypical images.
